Care & Maintenance

Hardware

Hardware in building is subject to deterioration from everyday use as well as environmental attack due to atmospheric and other conditions. Maintenance of hardware is even more important in severe environments such as coastal marine areas and some industrial areas. Even stainless steel products require maintenance to prevent deterioration in some environments.

To ensure that the products deliver their maximum performance for the entire duration of their design life and to comply with warranty conditions, it is essential that maintenance is carried out as per the following instructions.

All operable tracks and bearings

Remove all surface contaminants by wiping all visible track surfaces with a damp soft cloth and a mild detergent, then wipe with a clean dry cloth.

Using a spatula or similar, apply a small amount of white petroleum jelly or similar lubricant to the inner lip of each side of the track. Ensure that the wheels pass through the lubricant and it is distributed evenly along the tracks. Place additional lubricant around the bearings.

Lubricant reduces wear, improves smoothness, and further protects against corrosion of track and bearings. In severe environments, apply a thin film of a corrosion preventative such as CRC Marine 66 or Inox by wiping with a soft cloth moistened with one of these products.

Hangers, Pivots & Brackets

Exposed surfaces should first be wiped down with warm soapy water on a soft rag and then rinsed off by wiping with a clean damp rag. A light spray application of a corrosion preventative such as CRC Marine 66 or Inox followed by a light wipe with a dry cloth to remove all excess is recommended.

Hinges

Wipe down with warm soapy water on a soft rag and then rinse by wiping with a clean damp rag. Application of a thin film of a light machine oil or a corrosion preventative such as CRC Marine 66 or Inox will help maintain the original lustre of the metal finish.

Drop Bolts

Spray application of a suitable lubricant such as Inox to the sliding pin inside the bolt and graphite powder to the lock cylinder is recommended. There are access holes or slots on all drop bolt products so that this can be done without removing the locks from the doors.

Locks

Lock bodies are generally made from mild steel or brass. In harsh environments some may corrode. Suitable lubricants and anti corrosive treatments (aerosol liquid lonolin) will be required for locks to maintain optimum performance.

Louvres

Louvre galleries and blades should be cleaned using a chamois dampened with clean soapy water. Special care should be taken to avoid excessive amounts of water gaining entry into internal mechanisms through the handle notch. Rinse with clean water.

It is recommended that the following quick inspections be carried out at required maintenance intervals.

  • Inspect all screw fixings for firmness
  • Ensure all louvre blades operate freely
  • Ensure that seals are in place and clean
